Umers is a region organized into one kingdom in a feudalistic system. It is perhaps the most powerful region in Atha, at least militarily. It is ruled by a hereditary king. The current king is King Teril IV. The capitol is Norwick.

Geographically, Umers is characterized by low rolling and often forested hills in the west and southwest, colder and flatter forests and grasslands in the east, and gnarled grasslands in the south. The center of Umers, however, is the largest and most productive portion. It is where most of the population lives and is famed for agriculture, particularly wheat.

The population of Umers consists primarily of Umerians though other races are not uncommon. Umerians in Umers are, by and large, racist to some degree.Forest Elves, Desert Elves, Ice Dwarves, and Ice Elves are considered fine companions. Atridians are also well-liked, although are considered somewhat untrustworthy. Gnomes and Halflings are considered weak, but not altogether unpleasant. All other races are considered uncivilized, uncouth, and are, in general, snubbed and are legal to be used as slaves. Kel, however, have a specific role in Umerian culture. Kel women are considered prostitutes, so much so that a Kel woman who is not a prostitute, a mistress, or other similar function is almost unthinkable. Kel males are generally treated with disdain, although they often serve as guards for the brothels.

Furthermore, Umers is very patriarchal. Women are not totally oppressed but they are limited to certain occupations, places, etc. Female chastity is of particular importance to denizens of Umers. Before a woman in married in Umers, she is customarily inspected by a cleric of Hyeron, if the woman is found to be virginal – the wedding goes on as planned. If not, the woman is branded and cast out from society or sold as a slave. Married women, however, often have a great deal of power and manage their husbands estate while they are out on business or war. Peasant women also enjoy more freedom as they often are married without Hyeronic consent or blessing – they are simply peasants so are almost invisible.

Religiously, the population of Umers tends to venerate Hyeron above all deities in the Athan Pantheon. The other gods are considered his lessers, and almost degraded to servants of Hyeron. The other gods are prayed to for specific interventions or occasions, but always to carry a message to Hyeron (much like prayers to Catholic saints in our world). Residents of Umers carry a specific resentment towards Scylla and her worship is illegal. Even more illegal, is the worship of her son Penthus and Penthan worshipers are murdered on the spot. Also, all magic is outlawed except for clerics of Hyeron, who operate (mostly) beyond the law and have their own system of order.

Culturally among themselves and the respected races, the denizens of Umers are very concerned with rank and order. Speaking to someone beyond your station in a negative way can lead to many negative consequences, from a general snubbing to death. They believe that some people are simply born better than others (the more liberal say that some people are simply born for certain occupations). Regardless, many important positions are inherited, although merit does not go unnoticed. There is a rising merchant class that the system’s structure is not ready to deal with, but – for now – the merchants provide a valuable service although they are generally shunned by the upper class.
